Golf Course Superintendent and Club COO: Bob Davis

At the age of fourteen, Bob Davis started his very first job at Merion Golf Club (host of the 2013 Men’s US Open). What started out as just a summer job quickly developed into a passion for the game of golf and the turf science behind successfully managing a golf course.  After eight great years at Merion he decided to pursue the Turf Industry and enrolled in the Turfgrass Science Program at Penn State University. Upon completion of this program, Bob landed a job at the prestigious Oakmont Country Club, in Oakmont PA.

Throughout his six years at Oakmont Country Club, Bob worked his way up to the position of Assistant Golf Course Superintendent. It was during this time that he experienced two Major Championships, played a key role in several aspects of golf course construction/renovation, and obtained the skills to advance his career. In August of 2010, Bob joined Chartiers Country Club, where he currently holds the Title of Golf Course Superintendent.

When Bob is away from the golf course he enjoys spending time with his wife Angela Davis and their son Robert Rambo Davis JR.

Golf Course

The Club’s 18 hole golf course, laid out on over 300 acres just off Baldwin Road in Robinson Township, was designed by Willie Park, twice British Open Champion, and one of the best known golf architects of the early 1900’s. The par 70 course measures 6,562 yards from the blue tees, 6,232 from the white tees, and 5,217 from the red tees. Slope ratings are 132, 128 and 118 respectively.

The course has been renovated many times over the years – most notably in 1991 when golf course architect, Arthur Hills, added new tees and bunkers and reconfigured several holes for better playability. Over the course of his long career, Arthur Hills has designed more than one hundred fifty courses and overseen the renovation of another one hundred.
